The other day in class we watched a movie on North India. Here is some of the many facts we learned. Did you know over 700 languages are spoken in India. In 1633, the shah of India built a monument called the Taj Mahal. The shah built this extraordinary monument as a tomb for his wife when she died. His wife died after having her 14 or 15 child. When the shah’s wife died he buried her in the basement of the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal took 22 years to complete. When the shah died he was buried in the Taj Mahal. Speaking of dieing people in India are cremated day and night. After the people are cremated they throw the ashes in the Ganges River. People throw the ashes in the Ganges because Hindu people believe the Ganges is holy. Hindu people also bathe in the Ganges because they believe all their sins will be washed away. It is bad for people to swim and bathe in the Ganges because it is one of the worlds most polluted rivers.

The world uses a lot of crude oil everyday. Soon the worlds oil supply will run out. No one is sure how much oil is left but scientists think there is only about 2.6 trillion barrels of oil left. The United States has only 4 percent of the worlds population but uses about 25 percent of the worlds oil supply. The U.S. economy is more energy efficient than it used to be. There is some oil in blocks of marlstone or oil shale. The western United States has large deposits of oil shale. It is very difficult and expensive to extract the oil from the oil shale. Oil provides 40 percent of the worlds energy. There are two groups of oil suppliers which are OPEC and non-OPEC. OPEC stands for Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The OPEC members are Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Venezuela, Nigeria, Algeria, Indonesia, Libya, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The non-OPEC members are the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea, Norway, and Russia. There are many ways to use less oil. One way to cut down on oil is to use the Minicat car that runs on compressed air instead of gasoline which contains oil. Another way to cut down on oil is to install the most efficient heating, lighting, and cooling systems in buildings.
